I sketched a website before I "designed" it.

Old NOVO Studios site vs. my sketch of what I wanted: minimal, whitespace, a little luxury.

Turned the sketch into a prompt, let AI generate the first pass. It wasn't finished:

Hero image was missing, sourced and fit one myself

Removed a gradient overlay that clashed with the minimal look

Swapped placeholder images for real product shots

Lengthened a line that felt cramped

Darkened the blue to match the mood

AI got me most of the way there. The judgment calls were still mine.

Pop-ups weren't planned. They were a fix.

1997, Tripod.com. A car company didn't want their ad next to content they weren't comfortable with. A small team wrote code to open ads in a separate window instead.

That quick fix became the pop-up. For years, it was one of the most hated things online. It never left. It evolved.

Today:

Average conversion rate: ~4.8%

Ecommerce popups: up to 6.88%

Top campaigns: 26%+

Mobile now outconverts desktop

One accidental fix for an advertiser's awkward moment turned into one of the most reliable growth tools on the web.

Makes you wonder what "annoying" idea today becomes standard practice in 20 years.
